Many invisible threads connect nature to our plates, backyards, and to the products we use—but of them all, water is the lifeblood. Experts have warned of a looming water crisis that could mirror our nations energy woes.

South Africa will have a 17% water deficit by 2030. Unless we take urgent steps to implement a range of integrated solutions, our next looming crisis—like the Eskom crisis—will be severe water scarcity.

With droughts, extreme storms and floods increasing in frequency and intensity, South Africa is grappling with the long-term effects of water systems that are buckling under the weight of our demand. We need long-term holistic solutions that meet rural and urban water delivery challenges. That is where NuWater comes in.

Driving water innovation through our ground-breaking patented reverse-osmosis technology, we are global pioneers in water treatment solutions. We have the expertise, experience and resources, to reclaim and recover any source water to the exacting quantity and quality required by the Agricultural, Industrial, Mining, Power, Gas & Oil, and Municipal and Residential sectors.

Did you know that The Radisson Blu Hotel at the Granger Bay Waterfront can produce 7,000 litres of fresh water an hour using seawater pumped from a 100m borehole? It is the latest business in Cape Town to install a reverse-osmosis desalination plant so that it is no longer reliant on municipal water.

In previous decades in South Africa, we have invested heavily in engineered water infrastructure—but we can no longer solve our water woes by building more dams or canals. We need to rehabilitate, re-use and maintain natural areas, which are a source of water for our cities and farms.

In the face of challenges such as the recent water crisis of Cape Town, a growing number of South African organisations and businesses are assuring their water security by harnessing desalination technology. They are installing their water treatment facilities on-site. What are you doing?

We need fresh water to survive, and with a planet composed of 70% water, this should not be hard to achieve. But 97% is salt water, and only 1% is potable. With climate change and drought experienced in many areas of South Africa, our water supply is running short. But there is a solution—and it is called Desalination.

South Africa boasts a coastline of over 2500 kilometres, which can provide a climate-independent source of water for critical human needs and industry and agriculture. Utilising our ocean is an effective way to secure water supplies against the effects of climate change, a growing population, and drought.

A key player in the South African water management sector, NuWater designed, built and operated the world first full-scale seawater desalination plant. We address South African water challenges by pushing technology forward while maintaining energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Our modular and mobile desalination plants can produce 15 000 to 50 million litres of high-grade potable water a day.

Global water shortages kill thousands of people every year. According to the World Health Organisation, —2.5 billion people live without clean water at home (over 35% of the global population).

While the current world population sits at 7.7 billion, by 2050, about 9 billion people will inhabit our planet. This spike in population will affect the already limited water availability around the world.

Water is scarce and limited. That means we need to start looking at seawater desalination. With only 0,007% of earth water drinkable, the process of desalination provides a climate-independent source of water for critical human needs and economic development.

A proven, effective way to secure water supplies against the effects of climate change, a growing population and drought—desalination should not be looked at as a last resort. We must view it as a viable and cost-effective solution to our planets water scarcity needs.

Did you know that NuWater’s water, wastewater, and desalination plants can produce 15 000 to 50 million litres of high-grade potable water a day?

South Africa is grappling with the long-term effects of two decades of water management neglect coupled with zero national, regional, and local water strategies. Unless we take urgent steps to implement long-term holistic solutions that meet rural, urban, industrial and agricultural water delivery challenges, experts warn of a looming water crisis that could mirror our day-to-day energy woes.

To turn this around, NuWater is addressing South African water-energy challenges by pushing technology forward to improve water management systems while maintaining energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Aimed at shorter-term planning horizons and more localised requirements—NuWater design, build, finance and operate advanced plants for the treatment of water and wastewater, and the provision of high-quality drinking and industrial process water from sea, river, ground and wastewater sources.

Water is a hot topic in South Africa, with accountability and stringent environmental regulations in force. The mining, power, oil, gas, agricultural and industrial sectors produce massive amounts of wastewater. The bulk of which is released back into the environment untreated, further compromising our already freshwater shortage.

Our current approach to water and wastewater infrastructure cannot meet water quality standards and population demand. The World Bank predicts that by 2025 two-thirds of the global population will run short of fresh drinking water. And with a South African semi-arid climate and an average annual rainfall of half the world average—we need clean and profitable solutions.

NuWater provides water-reliant clients with sustainable supplies that reduce operational costs and environmental impact. Using the latest technologies, we design our modular and mobile water and wastewater treatment plants to extract maximum value from the water source available.

The world is running out of water. Did you know that it takes 15,415 litres of water to produce 1kg of meat, 9,063 litres of water to produce 1kg of nuts, and 322 litres of water to produce 1kg of carrots?

According to the UN, about 9 billion people will inhabit our planet by 2050. Earth will require more water to produce the estimated 60% extra food needed. But the agricultural industry is already the highest water user, consuming up to 52% of our global water supply.

The solution?

As we face overpopulation and climate change, wastewater treatment has become the cornerstone of the agricultural industry. Wastewater is a relatively untapped supply—offering triple dividends to cities, farmers, and the environment.

Wastewater in agriculture promotes sustainable farming, reduces purification levels and fertilisation costs, ensures a reliable food supply to towns, and preserves scarce water supplies while maintaining environmental quality.

Balancing social, economic and environmental priorities, NuWater delivers projects across the entire water cycle and is championing the face of modern agriculture with deployable and re-deployable modular and mobile water treatment systems that reclaim millions of litres of high-quality water from seawater, brackish water and wastewater.

Water, water, water—South African municipal water problems are never-ending. Add climate change and overpopulation to an already shrinking water supply, and South Africans will have
more problems than Eskom’s energy woes. South Africa will have zero water. But NuWater’s high-performing water treatment plants address these water problems quickly, efficiently, and cost-effectively.

NuWater is a specialist provider of solutions and services for the treatment, reclamation, and re-use of wastewater and the desalination of sea and brackish water. The mobility and modularity of NuWater solutions are five times smaller than the industry average. Not only does this enable NuWater to deliver rapidly deployable and re-deployable water and wastewater treatment solutions, but it also enables a larger treatment capacity to accommodate a smaller environmental footprint than conventional plants.

Did you know a single NuWater compact plant can treat over 20 million litres of wastewater each day and can even be scaled down to treat as of little as 50,000 litres per day? Not only does the ability to rapidly add and reduce capacity, as well as change plant configurations in line with customer operational changes or the chemistry of the wastewater lower costs, but it also eliminates redundancy.

NuWater is turning the farming sectors water challenges into success stories with their flexible, rapidly deployable, and readily scalable treatment plants, combined with its innovative build, own and operate the commercial model. Highly celebrated for championing the face of modern agriculture wastewater treatment, we have the technology and experience to offer competitive and innovative solutions.
